Jenny McCarthy was not fooled.
It didn’t take long for the Hibiscus to sing “It’s Raining Men,” the judge said on Wednesday’s episode The masked singer Correctly identify who wore these oversized petals. While the others suspected it Ted Lassois Hannah Waddingham (become real!) and Janice Dickinson (though!), McCarthy seemed to know almost immediately, thanks in large part to the people she befriended during her stay in the Big Apple.
Here’s Hibiscus – best known as Countess Luann De Lesseps from the original cast of The Real Housewives of NYC – talking about how she couldn’t outwit McCarthy and what she hoped her song would do for her (non-existent) love life.
Reporter Your costume was very nice. It must have been sad to give it up.
LUANN DE LESSEPS We talked about my inspiration and somehow agreed on a flower. I told them a story about my mother and how she explained puberty as this beautiful flower that will bloom one day. This is how hibiscus was born. When I saw this costume I was so overwhelmed. It is so beautiful.
Reporter Was it difficult in any way?
THE LESSEPS Well, it looked harder than it actually was. I had the petal backpack, but it wasn’t too heavy. I feel like there were other masked singers who wore heavier costumes. So I was very happy with the hibiscus. It was very streamlined. The most difficult thing is to wear the mask over your head, because there is not much room in it. You can’t see very well. No peripheral vision. So it was a challenge, but it was a challenge that I was really up for. I was excited when the offer came to do it. I love singing and I love a good competition show and I’ve always been a fan of this show.
Reporter Were there one or two cues in the show that made you fear you might be quickly identified?
THE LESSEPS I was most worried about Jenny McCarthy because she has known me for years. We knew each other from New York when she had a radio show and our kids went to school together, so she knows I’m a nurse. So I thought, “Oh God, she’s going to know it’s me.”
Reporter What do you think of her other guesses? Like Hannah Waddingham of Ted Lasso?
THE LESSEPS Yes, I was surprised. Things really started happening that they had no idea about and Jenny had an aha moment. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe she chose me.’ Of course you want to get to the end, and when she said my name I thought, ‘Oh, what a shame.’ I have to go. ‘
Reporter: Any idea who the anteater is?
THE LESSEPS I don’t know that. You covered people so well. I mean, you’re literally walking around in a Darth Vader outfit all the time, so you don’t know who anyone is. It’s quite amazing how well they do their job.
Reporter Why did you choose It’s Raining Men?
THE LESSEPS It was a manifestation for me. I’m single so I thought I’d show it. It’s raining, people!
Reporter You are currently touring with your cabaret and have a show called “Marry F Kill” planned for February. What is it about?
THE LESSEPS You know the game girls play: marry, fuck, kill? When I do my cabaret, I do a question and answer session with the audience, and at every show I’m asked who I would marry, fuck or kill. I have a good story about that. I was doing a show at 54 Below and a lady got up and said: David Letterman, Brad Pitt, Andrew Dice Clay. Who would you marry, fuck and kill? I thought, “Well, I’m going to marry David Letterman because he’s funny and rich.” I was never a big fan of Brad Pitt, so I gotta kill him. So I think I’m going to fuck Andrew Dice Clay.’ She said, “Good, because he’s standing next to me.” I swear to God. I thought, “Oh my God, it’s a good thing I said that.” He stood up, a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He says: “This show is fucking great.” He was taken there by his fiancé. I had no idea he was there. It just really worked out. I’m starting with the Marry, Fuck and Kill show on Valentine’s Day at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, because who doesn’t want to talk about Marry Fuck and Kill on Valentine’s Day? The inspiration really comes from every show I do. A new song will be released for the tour, but until then there will be new shows in New Orleans, Houston, Chicago and Atlanta. I tour all over the country. So it’s very exciting and something I really enjoy. Somehow I found my calling thanks to a very old friend who said, “Luann, you love to sing in front of your friends.” You like to organize parties and like to tell jokes. You should do cabaret.’ And that’s actually how it started.
Reporter What are you booking in the cabaret?
THE LESSEPS The show is always new. I talk a lot about Luann & Sonja: Crappie Lake and that experience. All song choices are based on my love for music. I’m going to sing “David Bowie” and “Do Let’s Dance” because it comes from a story about meeting Mick Jagger at David Bowie’s house. There is a lot of history in the songs and music, and of course I sing my classic “Money Can’t Buy You Class.” I just have so much fun. I do what I love. I always say the audience arrives in a Toyota and leaves in a Rolls Royce because I really put on a great show.
