EXCLUSIVE: The BBC is evolving Peaky Blinders Creator Steven Knight’s drama is set at a university in Birmingham, with plans to potentially adapt it into a repurposed series.
The as yet untitled project, which follows the lives of a group of young people at one of five universities in the country’s second largest city, will be produced from Knight’s new multi-million pound Digbeth Loc. Studios in the West Midlands that opened a few months ago. Banijay-backed Kudos and BBC Studios are co-producers.
The college drama is still in the early stages of development, but we expect the series, if given the green light, will be positioned as a potential prime-time earner. UK TV Trade Broadcast previously reported that it was developing the university series, but no broadcaster was attached at the time.
Deadline brings you the news in the days following the BBC’s cancellation doctors – the Birmingham-produced drama which launched the careers of a number of prominent British writers after 23 years and which the broadcaster attributed to “super-inflation in drama production”.
The BBC said it saved money doctors will be spent on a “series of new programs in the region.” Although no decisions have been made and Knight’s drama has not yet received the green light, it can be considered a locally produced drama that promotes local talent. Earlier this year, the BBC postponed production of another long-running returnee: silent witness, to the West Midlands, after which the company announced it would deliver at least two “high-impact” scripted series a year from the region, while increasing investment in training and development.
Knight serves as head writer for the college drama with a writing group of younger people.
The productive one Peaky Blinders The creator is currently devoting much of his energy to setting up a production in Birmingham and telling stories from his hometown. this city, Knight’s semi-autobiographical drama, also filmed at Digbeth Loc, will soon be broadcast on the BBC.
Meanwhile, Knight is writing an upcoming book war of stars Film starring Daisy Ridley and Alfred Hitchock’s Paramount Pictures remake Fear of heights and worked on a TV version of William Shakespeare’s First Folio happy valley Starring Sarah Lancashire.
The BBC declined to comment on the development.
