“The Tonight Show” gets a new head writer as AD Miles returns and Mason Steinberg departs

EXCLUSIVE: Small change is included The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

AD Miles, who was previously head writer on the NBC show and also worked with Fallon late at night, returns to the program as head writer.

Mason Steinberg, who was appointed to the position last year, is leaving the company.

Miles has a long history with Fallon; He was lead author of Late Night with Jimmy Fallonwas broadcast between 2009 and 2014 and then postponed with the first SNL Star on today’s show, where he served as lead author between 2014 and 2017. In total, he co-wrote more than 750 episodes of late-night television.

He is probably best known for his appearance on the show itself; most notably as stepfather Gary in Fallon’s series Ew! Sketches that featured Emma Stone, Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama and Drew Barrymore earlier this year.

He also performed as a member of The Ragtime Gals Today’s showThis included the help of Justin Timberlake and Steve Carell, among others.

After more work Today’s show, Miles moved back to Los Angeles to pursue other opportunities. He was head writer for the ABC reboot The Gong Show and he appeared in series like Wet, hot American Summer, Sherman’s Showcase, Between Two Ferns: The Movie as well as in the Netflix animated series Tyres.

Steinberg joined the show as head writer in 2022 after writing for a number of awards shows, including the CMT Music Awards, the MTV Movie & TV Awards and the E! Public Choice Awards. He was also head writer for NBC Bring the funa comedy competition series with Kenan Thompson and TBS’ The misery index. He was also co-lead author Chelsea, the Netflix late-night show starring Chelsea Handler; a staff writer about Lopez tonight; and a writer McEnroetennis legend John McEnroe’s short-lived talk show.

The change in head writer comes after Chris Miller became showrunner of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon He replaced Jamie Granet-Bederman last year.
