Dave Chappelle’s stand-up performance led to a walkout from some audience members on Thursday night after he commented on the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
The Wall Street Journal The comedian reportedly expressed his opinion during his appearance at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, where he condemned the Hamas attacks on October 7.eand also condemned the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip.
The newspaper reports that Chappelle also said that the US is guilty of murdering innocent civilians and that war crimes have occurred. Chappelle then criticized the Israeli government for cutting off supplies to the people of Gaza and blocking humanitarian aid. He concluded by saying that two wrongs don’t make a right.
Oddly enough, that is Daily email reports Chappelle claimed through a spokesperson that he was not in Boston Thursday night, but other viewers provided reports of his statement.
The WSJ reports that while one audience member told Chappelle to shut up, others cheered and shouted “Free Palestine.” Some viewers walked out and later posted on social media that Chappelle’s words made them feel unsafe. One wrote:
“The crowd cheered Chappelle during his tirade. I was sick. We were sick. I turned to my friends and my wife and said I think it’s time to go.
“We went out and met many other Jews who had left the program. Never in my life have I felt so unsafe and so scared by what I saw.”
This is certainly not the first time Chappelle has faced controversy for his words. In 2022, his Netflix comedy special sparked complaints from the streamer’s employees over his comments about the trans community. Netflix refused to remove the series from its platform because of its commitment to upholding freedom of expression.
