EXCLUSIVE: Brian Tee (Chicago Med, Foreigners) will produce the limited anthology series The scapegoat. The project is currently being sold to streamers and premium cablers.
Season 1 titled Tokyo Rosewill adapt Mike Weedall’s historical novel, Iva, the true story of Tokyo Rose. It tells the story of Iva Toguri, who was wrongly convicted of treason and sent to prison for being the infamous radio propagandist “Tokyo Rose” during World War II.
Tee, whose grandparents were held in an internment camp during the war, believes “Tokyo Rose” is “just the first of many universal stories to be told in future seasons.” The scapegoatincluding contemporary stories, about people who endured and survived the hatred of this country and who became hopeful symbols of our American ideals.” Tee also points out that the box office success of Oppenheimer in the Summer demonstrates the public’s “appetite for stories that question the complicated moral fabric of our history.”
Barry Schkolnick (Law and authority, The good woman) will co-write the series with playwright Tracy Held, vice chair of the WGA’s Asian American Writers Committee. Schkolnick will also serve as showrunner.
The project is implemented with the support of the civil rights organization The Japanese Americans Citizens League. The JACL is a longstanding national organization committed to securing and protecting the civil and human rights of Asian and Pacific Islanders.
“As hate crimes against Asian Americans continue to be common in the United States since the Covid outbreak, it is time to reflect on our nation’s legacy during World War II and the ways in which Japanese Americans were treated despite their loyalty to them. citizens of the place they called home. “Iva’s story is a cautionary tale about the injustices that can occur when a nation and its powerful institutions are blinded by the flames of prejudice,” the JACL tells Deadline in an exclusive statement.
“With a fiery media eager to spread messages of fear, Iva fought the darkest side of America against a nation that needed a scapegoat to blame for the horrors of war, racial discrimination and the internment of all Americans of Japanese descent. Themes of the dark underbelly of contemporary America,” she added.
Tea will air on NBC for eight seasons Chicago Med and gear up for the premiere of Lulu Wang’s limited series for Prime Video Foreigners in 2024. ForeignersSet against the backdrop of Hong Kong, it tells the story of an international community whose lives are forever linked after a sudden family tragedy.
Tee’s departure from the hit film “Dick Wolf” was procedural so he could spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities to expand his experience as an actor, aspiring director and producer. His first project is The scapegoat with others also on his radar.
