Kennedys: an American brother (Arte) – 4 things to know about JFK’s family

This documentary film looks at the saga of this Irish Catholic family, one of whom will be John Fitzgerald, the 35th President of the United States.

INITIALLY…

The Kennedy story, like many other Americans, begins in Ireland. A terrible famine fell on the whole country in the 1840s. Tens of thousands of Irish were later forced to emigrate and choose to go to the United States. Patrick Kennedy, the founder of the American Kennedy dynasty, is one of them. Born in Dunganstown in 1823, he boarded a sailboat and sailed for the New World. Patrick Kennedy eventually settled in Boston. If the first wave of immigrants didn’t have an easy job, the second generation has started climbing the ladder…especially in the political landscape.

TARGETS

In politics, we see Patrick Joseph Kennedy and John Fitzgerald, the two grandfathers of the future US President. While the two men do not appreciate each other much, their children Joseph Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald fall in love and form the Kennedy clan. The ambitious Joseph developed business acumen at a very early age, worked in a bank soon after his education and became president of a banking institution. In 1917, a financial scandal forced him to retire. He has rebounded as a board member of several major corporations, stock market speculator, improv movie operator, and producer of B-movies in Hollywood.

BIG FAMILY

Rose and Joseph Kennedy had nine children: Joseph Patrick (born 1915), John Fitzgerald (1917), Rose Marie (1918), Kathleen (1920), Eunice (1921), Patricia (1924), Robert (1925), Jean (1928) and Edward (1932). “ Joseph Kennedy knew his children well, which was quite unusual for the time. They had some sort of agreement with Rose. It was decided to look after the children until the age of 10-12. And he was the one who took over from there explains historian David Nasaw.

political animal

John Fitzgerald entered politics after fighting in the Pacific War and entered the House of Representatives in 1946. In 1952, he participated in the senate elections in his native Massachusetts state and was elected. “ John Fitzgerald was destined for a career as an academic or journalist. All of a sudden, he had to enter politics because his father wanted it. biographer Larry Tye notes. On January 2, 1960, he declared himself the Democratic presidential candidate. He can count on the support of celebrities like Harry Belafonte or Frank Sinatra. This recalibrates the campaign hit song High Hopes (high hopes), which the candidate calls “Jack.”
