Paul Newman, restless (Arte) – How did the actor become a nuisance to President Nixon?

On Sunday evening, Arte brings Paul Newman into the limelight with a documentary that pays homage to the man as well as the artist’s immense talent.

“It was my greatest pride to be ranked 19th out of 20 on Nixon’s blacklist. The Hollywood star declared without irony. A dedicated actor for civil rights, the Vietnam War, or the LGBT+ cause, Newman has always funded charities. In 1982, he created his own brand of food products, Newman’s Own Inc., to donate all profits to charities.

With the silhouette of a Greek statue and his unreal blue eyes, Paul Newman embodies the essence of the Hollywood starlet. Paul Newman, the son of a despised Jewish merchant and a worshiping Catholic mother, cuts his teeth at the Actors Studio. Hired by Warner, he suffered from rivalry from James Dean and Marlon Brando in his early days. But while “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” earned him his first Oscar nomination, the actor saved himself from the big boys by buying his exclusive contract for half a million dollars. From now on, he will prefer complex characters bordering on the American dream. After winning an Oscar for Martin Scorsese’s “The Color of Money” in 1987, he slowly disappeared from the screens until the twilight finale of “Paths of Perdition”…
