"Wearing this jersey is not a parade at Gay Pride" : OM player Valentin Rongier chases the rainbow jersey controversy in Ligue 1

While the last day of Ligue 1 was marked by the refusal of some players to wear rainbow jerseys to fight against homophobia, OM midfielder Valentin Rongier made statements on the subject…

Valentin Rongier spoke without the slightest filter about the latest controversy in Ligue 1. Last weekend was the day to fight homophobia. To celebrate the occasion, the players of the French championship wore a flocked rainbow jersey, referring to the flag of the LGBTQ+ community. However, some players, such as Mostafa Mohamed from Nantes or Zakaria Aboukhlal from Toulouse, refused to play with their teams in order not to wear this tunic: “I did not take part in today’s Toulouse-Nantes game. I don’t want to argue at all, but I have to state my position. Respect for differences means respect for others, respect for self, respect for what to share and what stays different. I respect all differences. I respect all faiths and beliefs. This respect includes others, but it also includes respect for my personal beliefs. It was not possible for me to participate in this campaign due to the importance of my origins, culture, beliefs and beliefs. I hope my decision will be respected, not to argue about it and I wish everyone to be respected.“, especially justified by the Egyptian forward of FC Nantes.

On the Olympique de Marseille side, all the players wore this rainbow jersey without the slightest concern, as Valentin Rongier, OM’s vice-captain, told us in his columns. Provence this Friday, May 19: “There was no argument in the dressing room, at home. We know there is one day a year for the LGBT community. To agree or disagree with it is one thing, but players are not asked to walk down the street for support. It’s just a flock form…Later, the 28-year-old midfielder did not hide his disappointment at the refusal of some of his friends to wear a simple jersey: “This is a very complex situation. I don’t know what goes through the minds of these players, the training they have received, what has been put in their heads. You have to take all this into account. But I also think it’s a communication problem. These players should be told that wearing this jersey is not performing at Gay Pride. I’m just saying that we need to fight homophobia because there are injustices, people who are beaten, killed for being gay, and that in 2023 this kind of situation shouldn’t happen anymore. This is impossible. We have to go ahead and fight these injustices.
