EXCLUSIVE: Welcome to Earth with Will Smith Producer Nutopia continues the game of recurring formats with the appointment of a new UK creative director.

Tom Watt-Smith is from Nutopia Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb Producer Lion TV just months after being promoted to Lion’s Creative Director for Premium and Specialist Factual.

At Nutopia, he will take on the newly created role of Creative Director of Formats and Special Projects to expand the London-based transatlantic team’s roster of documentary and recurring formats. He will “support Nutopia’s continued growth into new markets, price points and territories,” the indie said.

Nutopia’s shows include Nat Geo’s Welcome to Earth with Will Smiththat of Netflix African queens and heaven stories royal mob Jane Root’s outfit also struck a deal with former Travel Channel boss Pat Younge to develop a diverse and inclusive roster.

During his three and a half years as a Lion, Watt-Smith developed and produced a number of programs including those for the BBC Stolen: Catch the art thievesPBS/ARTE save Venice and an upcoming Caribbean show hosted by Liz Bonnin. He was promoted to his current position in January following a reorganization with All3Media stablemate Lime Pictures. Previous employers include Raw and Studio Lambert.

Watt-Smith will report to Nutopia’s recently promoted Chief Creative Officer, Simon Willgoss, who will describe him as “one of the best creative minds in the UK, taking us into new markets and genres”.

Watt-Smith said the opportunity was “impossible to turn down”.

“The scale and ambition of Nutopia’s projects is legendary and I am honored to be a part of the next chapter in their story,” he added.
