John Oliver welcomed the Last week tonight viewers by “business dad” Warner Bros. naming Discovery after announcing HBO Max’s rebrand to Max.
“Our corporate father took the content cleanup one step higher and threw HBO out completely,” he said at the start of the late-night show.
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery is merging its new streaming service, which would merge content from the streaming service HBO Max and Discovery+. The name of the new streamer would simply be Max.
“The Max service is a comprehensive content mosaic that is unmatched in the breadth, reach and excellence of its offering,” said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content. “We’re unique in that we have the best in every category, whether it’s ratings, awards, fandom. We know we can satisfy any craving because we have the brands people love. With Max, they find what they want, when they want it.”
Oliver has previously been critical of Warner Bros. ‘s cancellation of films and series. Discovery, including the DC film bat girl. Oliver previously tried to pull shows on the streaming service HBO Max “to appease Wall Street”. In the Last week tonight Season finale in November 2022, Oliver called HBO’s parent company again, saying they were “too busy to cancel shows.”
Max will launch in the US on May 23, with all existing HBO Max subscribers having access to the new service. The service has three pricing tiers, starting at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for the Max Ad Lite tier, $15.99 per month or $149.99 per year for the Max Ad Free tier and $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year for Max Ultimate Ad Free tier , which also includes streaming in 4K.
