World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) today apologized for using an image of the Auschwitz concentration camp in a video that upstaged a match.
The WWE video used the camp footage with audio of wrestler Dominik Mysterio posing as a criminal held at the facility.
“We had no knowledge of what was being depicted,” said a WWE statement released Friday. “As soon as we found out, it was removed immediately. We apologize for this error.”
The images do not appear in replays on YouTube. The photo showed barbed wire fences and watchtowers of the concentration camp.
WWE recently announced its acquisition by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) parent company Endeavor. The combination of the companies would create one of the world’s largest sports and entertainment companies with a combined value of $21 billion.
