HBO Max’s Gordita Chronicles showrunner says show’s cancellation is part of a “diversity issue” in Hollywood

Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz talks about her feelings about the cancellation Chronicles of Gorditathe HBO Max show about a chubby Dominican girl growing up in the 1980s.

“Not only was it disappointing to hear about the cancellation, it was a shock as we were just about to start filming [Season 2] a few weeks later,” she shared Rolling stone. “It felt very unfair. It didn’t matter that our show was loved, it didn’t matter that we had good ratings. It didn’t matter that we were writing about content that mattered to underrepresented communities. None of that mattered.”

The show, starring Olivia Goncalves as the lovely Cucu, hit the streamer in June 2022 and was canceled a month later. HBO Max would phase out the show entirely by December 2022.

For Muñoz-Liebowitz, with a show where she “felt like I was reading about my own family.” However, the showrunner says the lack of support the series has received from executives points to a big problem in Hollywood.

“It’s wild to fight so hard to keep your content on the air,” added Muñoz-Liebowitz. “And a big part of that is the demographics of people who make decisions on the business side. If we don’t have acting talent that sees itself in the material, they won’t care enough to fight for something because they don’t connect with it. And again, that’s part of a diversity issue that we have in Hollywood right now.
