In this dark thriller, the actor plays a police commander with a disturbing profile who haunts the nightmares of Marianne Kacem (Nadia Farès)…

Enroll Commander Maulin, an instructor from the police academy. How would you describe this man?

Charles Berling: We can say that it belongs to a period when men did not attach much importance to feminine sensitivity. A generation that is shaped by patriarchy and thinks that a relationship without consent is not necessarily rape. Maulin had never questioned himself. He did not appreciate the pain and trauma that can be inflicted on a woman. Fate will put Captain Marianne Kacem (Nadia Farès) on her way, forcing her to embark on a moral journey and reconsider her behavior towards the fairer sex.

However, she was at the engagement of Lila (Ludmilla Makowski), a young blogger and friend of her daughter Soso (Marion Delage), who disappeared…

That’s all the finesse of director Nathalie Marchak. If macho shows brutality and stupidity, it also exposes the shortcomings of an overlong feminist radicalism, because it has been held in check for too long. It wasn’t because Maulin had wanted to sleep with him because he was being affectionate towards the young girl. However, she perceived it as an attack, even threatening to post a vague selfie on her blog.

What seduced you in this scenario?

The relevance of the topic and the quality of the article. I think it’s also our role, as artists, to help change mindsets.

Where does your feminist consciousness come from?

I was raised by my mother and grandmother who were very feminist. They fought for their freedom and made me realize very early on that being a man does not exempt me from certain duties. Mentality can only develop through education.

What do you think of this quote by Vincent Cassel, who said, “It will be a problem if men are too feminine”?

Nonsense ! That does not make sense. I love Vincent but how can it be insulting to express your femininity? I remember Putin’s words about Zelensky: “Whether you like it or not, beautiful, you have to put up with it.” This is the disgusting word of patriarchy in its roughest expression. As for gender awareness, it is not fixed. The individual can always improve in his life and sensitivity.

Right now in the theater you are playing the play of a writer with a feminine sensibility…

Definitely. These scary parents, by Jean Cocteau. It is played at the Hébertot Theater until 30 April. This is a work that puts women at the forefront. I am surrounded by Muriel Mayette-Holtz and Maria de Medeiros. And every now and then I come in New view, A series for Apple TV starring Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel, a designer who knows how to liberate women.
