We found Anton Vargas hunted by the Mafia tonight. Inspector Molina’s informant (Claudia Tagbo) gradually becomes a key figure in the series. How did you compose?
Bruno Lochet: First, we must pay tribute to the authors Stéphane Kaminka and Olga Vincent. Initially the role was not that developed and the actor’s directing gave me a certain freedom. I was inspired by a friend of mine who has somewhat the same profile. She has a physical Gabin, kind but marginal, living in an unusual place. The kind of guy who gets a little lost on the road.
How do you see it?
Anton is the father of a little girl who is not around, he continues his antics for her. Basically, Anton himself remained a child at heart, keeping part of the poem, even though he often dealt with obscure topics. Despite her nonsense and her whistleblowing, she has a naivete that touches me. He is a character that I have a lot of love for.
This poem, this fantasy, how do you express it?
I improvise! Sometimes I give little greetings to life. In one scene, a cross was placed on my hands. I had no text. I looked at Jesus and said, “You don’t look happy either. This sums up the character.
How is he related to Gaby Molina?
She’s kind of his only family. The inspector is like a mother to him. She often pulls him out of complicated situations and sometimes has to shove him around for information.
After taking a break from the TV series Les Deschiens, of which you are one of the recurring characters on Canal+, in 2000, you had a desert pass. How did you experience this period?
Acting is not an easy job. Nothing is ever achieved. It is not enough to have talent, it is necessary to be desired. I shot very little for three years. I ran the dumps. I took everything offered to me, I had to boil the pot! It was director Jean-Louis Lorenzi who got me back in the saddle with La Tranchée des Espoirs (2003). He then got me to act in the mini-series Beauregard (2008).
Today, directors are calling you more often…
I am not complaining. I shot a movie for Netflix on TV, Cosmetic Valley, by Jérémie Rozan, then an episode of Le Voyageur with Bruno Debrandt for France 3 (published 31 January, editor’s note). I also acted in the show. Killer Train (on Prime Video) with Alexandra and Audrey Lamy. You will see me at the cinema AstronautBy Nicolas Giraud, with Mathieu Kassovitz, Hélène Vincent and Jérémie Renier, which will be released in theaters on February 15. Apacheby Romain Quirot the following week.
At 63, what role do you aspire to?
I never had a career plan. On the other hand, we all aspire to roles that elevate you. Being a fan of Jean Gabin and Michel Simon, I dream of shooting remakes of A Monkey in Winter or The Old Man and Child.
