“What’s Left of Us” continues to be a hit HBO and in France hit the primer. And in episode 6, the showrunner of the series added a scene that seems innocent at first glance and is actually a minor revolution!
After a long journey, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are introduced to Maria (Rutina Wesley), who SPOILER turns out to be the wife of Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna). He takes 14-year-old Ellie to change and gives her clean clothes and a menstrual cup. Ellie then takes her menstrual cup with a leaflet and reads her instructions. “Oh,” she said, before folding it as instructed and saying “Yuck.”
Series creator Craig Mazin explained in an interview with Vulture that this object, unknown to the general public, was not placed there by accident. And to add: “The goal was to encourage those who don’t know what it is to ask someone or Google.”
And this isn’t the first time the show has tackled the issue of menstruation. Remember, in Episode 3, Ellie found a dusty pack of Tampax Pearl tampons in an abandoned store.
It’s a long-standing taboo topic on television until 2020, where blood is represented in blue ink in commercials… The creator of the series, himself the father of a young elephant, got the idea to include this passage during the series. Successive closures due to the Covid crisis ravaged by supermarkets.
He thinks: “These are the essential items we need or want. In a post-apocalyptic time, it’s frustrating to have to deal with this and run out of options. Why don’t we show? Especially since our heroine is a 14-year-old girl. It’s part of his life!”
