A crowd of about 100 people gathered outside Los Angeles Police Department headquarters Friday night to protest the Memphis Police Department’s firing of Tire Nichols.
At the protest, LAPD officers in riot gear faced the crowd, with one protester throwing a firecracker at a squad car. A crowd later rammed a police car with an officer inside.
The protests followed the Memphis Police Department’s release of video footage of Nichols’ death at the hands of local police.
Metal barriers surrounded LAPD headquarters, but were eventually taken down by the group.
Elsewhere, there were protests in New York, Atlanta, Memphis, Portland, Oregon, Philadelphia, Boston and Seattle. Businesses shuttered and some federal employees were sent home early in anticipation of unrest later in the evening
