Publisher of Saturday night liveThe pre-filmed segments of are in danger of going on strike unless NBCUniversal negotiates a fair contract for them with the Motion Picture Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700. However, NBCUniversal contacted the guild this evening to reschedule talk offers that could lead to a strike.
“The film workers SNL last year they made it clear they wanted a union and management recognized their wishes,” said Cathy Repola, the guild’s national executive director, before NBCU offered to return to the negotiating table. “So it is very disappointing that, despite the Guild’s best efforts, there is still no framework for a contract. We remain committed to finalizing an agreement as soon as possible and are keeping all options open to achieve that goal.”
The guild made proposals to NBCU last month, and the company responded on January 13. However, MPSE found the offer unacceptable and tonight both sides have not even agreed on additional talks.
Threatened with strikes, the 20-person post-production crew won union recognition in October under a ticket control agreement with NBCUniversal. An independent arbitrator confirmed that the majority of workers preferred union representation.
