Details of the Coronation of King Charles III. in May was unveiled by Buckingham Palace on Saturday. Celebrations are planned for three days, including a concert featuring “global music icons and contemporary stars,” none of whom were named.
The concert will take place on the east lawn of Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May, the day after the coronation, which is a solemn religious affair. The musical performance will be part of Britain’s celebrations, part of the so-called ‘Coronation Big Lunch’.
Concertgoers will be drawn from an audience made up of volunteers from the King and Queen Consort charities, as well as members of the public chosen by a national BBC vote.
Although specific artists were not specified, the palace said the program will feature a “world-class orchestra playing renditions of musical favourites, led by some of the world’s greatest entertainers, alongside artists from the world of dance… and a selection of spoken word.” – Series delivered by stars of stage and screen.
British refugee choirs, NHS choirs, LGBTQ+ choirs and deaf sign choirs will form The Coronation Choir and perform at the concert alongside The Virtual Choir, made up of singers from across the Commonwealth.
There is an additional public holiday on Monday, May 8. The public is invited to volunteer for projects in their communities under the banner “The Big Help Out”.
“Everyone is invited to join us every day,” UK digital, culture, media and sport secretary Michelle Donelan said in a statement. “Whether it’s by organizing a special street festival, watching the coronation ceremony or a spectacular concert on TV, or stepping out during The Big Help Out to help charities they care about.”
The actual coronation ceremony is expected to be shorter than the one used by Queen Elizabeth seven decades ago, eliminating several feudal elements. Queen Elizabeth’s coronation was the first royal event to be televised and lasted three hours.
One of the more dramatic moments is a performance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Who will be among the invitees is being watched with interest given Prince Andrew’s exile and Prince Harry’s controversial new memoir. ReservationsDescription of alleged royal abuses.
