Netflix to double Spanish TV originals in 2022, bringing more from UK and Japan – Report

EXCLUSIVE: According to a report by media analyst Enders Analysis, available to Deadline, over the past year Netflix has doubled its Spanish TV originals and shown more from the UK and Japan, as American content now makes up less than half of its library.

Enders’ research, which showed Netflix watched 300 more hours of television last year than in 2021, showed Spanish hours of content rising from 64 to 123, while Japan rose from 60 to 109 and the UK from 60 to 92.

In Spain, the country that produces La Casa de Papel, one of Netflix’s best non-English language titles of all time, shows like a supernatural thriller The girl in the mirror and acting high heat start was handed over.

US content grew much less proportionately, up 5% to 801 hours, and less than half of Netflix’s TV content library is now US content – a key milestone that demonstrates the global nature of the television industry.

However, considering this fact, Enders pointed out that nine of the top 10 most watched programs of the year came from the US, with only The crown Make it from the outside into the Top 10. Big American hits from last year included Wednesday and dahmermonster: The Jeffrey dahmer Story.

Meanwhile, Korean drama has largely leveled off after the incredible impact of the previous year squid game, slightly increased from 84 to 93 hours in 2022.

Enders’ report, titled Viewing is Narrowing, showed that the influx of global originals from Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and a plethora of newly launched streamers doesn’t necessarily mean that people are watching more of their shows, but are more likely to tune in. to stay their favorites.

While the UK’s top 250 most-watched episodes of Disney+ and Netflix account for 44% and 39% of all viewers respectively across platforms for live TV such as the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, the number drops to 28%, which shows it takes traditional broadcasters to the audience’s tendency to watch more programs.

Enders cited the “increasing efficiency and sharpness” of allowing streamers to offer their biggest shows to subscribers as reasons for this development, as well as the fact that this content is permanent and does not disappear from the platform.
