Bella Ramsey cannot be caged. Especially when it comes to gender identity.
Ramsey first garnered an enthusiastic following for playing the strong young ruler Lyanna Mormont on HBO game of thrones between 2016 and 2019. Now she will star in HBO’s heavily promoted series The last of usa dystopian thriller based on a video game.
19-year-old Ramsey opens up during the commercial ahead of the series debut.
“I think my gender has always been very volatile,” she said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “Someone will call me ‘she’ or ‘you’ and I won’t think about it. But I knew when someone called me ‘he’ it was quite exciting,” she said.
When filling out forms, Ramsey marks the “non-binary” option instead of “he” or “she.” According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, “non-binary” means not identifying exclusively as male or female, or without gender.
“I am very much only human,” she said. “Being gendered is something I don’t really care about, but I really don’t care about pronouns.”
The HBO series has the potential to further expand the adoring cult surrounding Ramsey in its powerful portrayal game of thrones. In The last of usA smuggler guides Ramsey across the post-apocalyptic United States in the wake of a deadly plague.
