some light The National Geographic limited series, which features the Dutch woman who risked her life to protect Anne Frank’s family from the Nazis, does not point the finger at the person (or people) who betrayed the family.
The project of Grey’s Anatomy Alumni Joan Rater and Tony Phelan follow Miep Gies (Bel Powley) who has agreed to hide her boss Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) and his family during the First World War.
“Miep always said we would never know [who betrayed them]Rater told reporters on Friday’s Television Critics Tour. “I’ll read a report and think, They haveand then I will read a separate and think, They have. We found it important not to answer this question. We’re not beating around the bush…we’re postulating a person who might have it. There were many people who could have [betrayed them].”
Production on the limited series, which will stream on Disney+ this spring, took place in Amsterdam and Prague, where Phelan said the production designer went “insane” recreating a near-perfect likeness of the annex building, which houses home to eight people – Otto Frank, his wife Edith and daughters Anne and Margot plus four others – went into hiding for two years. It was Miep who found Anne’s diary and kept it safe so that Otto, the only one of the eight survivors, could later share it with the world.
“Those who hid them were hopeful until the end,” says Rater about Miep, her husband Jan (Joe Cole) and the other helpers. “When you watch the episode where they’re finally discovered, they have a great moment after the Allies land, a moment they’ve all been waiting for and a local fruit vendor delivers all those strawberries. They make jam in the outhouse and think they will be free soon. It is so full of hope throughout the series. Even after her arrest, Miep did not give up and said: “We will get her back”. We play the hope they lived with.”
“This is not the Anne Frank story you learned in elementary school,” Schreiber added. “For me, it gives you a broader perspective of what it’s like to be Jewish.”
The limited series will also be directed by Susanna Fogel (The stewardess). It is from ABC Signature and Keshet Studios.
