Turkish Ship Owner Arrested in Lesbos on Cocaine Trafficking Warrant

Greek port authorities arrested a Turkish ship owner in Mytilene on Saturday, August 1, executing an outstanding arrest warrant dating from 2022.

The warrant relates to a case involving the trafficking of more than two tonnes of cocaine. According to authorities, the investigation targets a criminal organisation whose members are alleged to include Greek, Albanian and Turkish nationals.

The suspect was found during an inspection of a vessel that had resumed service on the Mytilene-Ayvalik ferry route after a long absence. He was listed on the ship’s crew register but had not disembarked at the port and was still aboard when officers carried out the check.

After his identity was confirmed, port authority officers arrested him. He is currently being held at the Mytilene Port Authority and is expected to appear before judicial authorities on Monday, who will decide on his further criminal treatment and detention.
