Plumbing consultant Ryan McNicoll has warned that pouring boiling water down kitchen sink drains can cause severe damage to modern plastic pipes. While homeowners frequently use boiling water during summer to clear foul smells and deter flies, experts warn the practice risks ruining household plumbing.
Reporting on alternative cleaning methods, home advice website Toms Guide highlighted McNicoll's recommendation to use a single tablespoon of biological washing powder instead. The laundry powder breaks down internal drain buildup without subjecting plumbing to thermal shock.
Biological washing powders contain active enzymes designed to decompose organic proteins and fatty matter. Most modern residential drainage systems rely on plastic pipes, such as polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, which are joined with rubber seals that can degrade or loosen under extreme heat.
Risks of boiling water in plastic pipes
Even in kitchens that appear spotless, a layer of organic deposits can accumulate inside sink drain holes. The combination of moisture, warmth and trapped residue creates an ideal environment for flies inside internal pipework.
McNicoll explained that boiling water may seem like an obvious fix, but it is not always the safest choice for plumbing systems. Modern homes feature plastic pipes and fittings that are not built to withstand repeated, sudden temperature swings. Over time, excessive heat places extra stress on seals and joints, potentially causing leaks or permanent pipe damage.
How to clean drains safely with laundry powder
To clear drains safely, McNicoll advised placing one tablespoon of biological laundry powder into the sink drain and leaving it undisturbed for at least half an hour. Following the wait, the drain should be flushed with plenty of warm water, avoiding boiling water entirely.
McNicoll noted that biological washing powder contains specialized enzymes engineered to break down organic matter and stubborn residues that cling to drainage walls. Used alongside warm water, the solution softens trapped dirt, keeps drains clean and removes the organic buildup that attracts insects.
Preventing fly infestations around the home
Experts emphasized that clearing flies from the home does not require purchasing expensive commercial products, as simple household items can effectively repel insects. For private houses, specialists recommend placing a container filled with a mixture that attracts flies outside at a distance from the building, trapping insects before they can enter.
