Bedroom rugs placed under beds are the main cause of dust accumulation in bedrooms, cleaning expert Jemma Henry from Bensons for Beds has warned.
Writing for consumer advice website Tom's Guide, Henry explained that large sections of carpet situated beneath bed frames are rarely vacuumed. This neglect allows substantial amounts of dust to collect over time, triggering allergic reactions for occupants.
Henry said soft furnishings, throw blankets and rugs create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere in a home, but act as major dust traps. She advised anyone dealing with severe dust issues or allergies to reconsider their bedroom textiles.
Bensons for Beds is a British retailer specializing in beds and bedroom furniture, while Tom's Guide is a consumer technology and lifestyle publication. Household dust typically accumulates in soft fabrics, where uncleaned materials harbor fine particles and environmental allergens.
Selecting and cleaning bedroom textiles
If a rug is essential for bedroom decor, Henry recommended choosing one small enough to be taken outside and shaken clean of dust, or selecting a machine-washable design.
Frequent washing of bed linen is also critical for controlling dust levels. Cleaning experts advise washing bedsheets once a week, particularly during summer months. The same schedule applies to pillowcases, bedspreads, decorative soft items, and mattress protectors.
Curtains also gather significant amounts of dust over time. Every time window curtains are opened or closed, trapped dust particles shake loose and fall onto the floor.
Mattress care and air purifiers
Mattresses require regular maintenance to prevent dust buildup. Experts suggest using a handheld vacuum cleaner to clean mattresses every few times bed linen is changed, noting that because mattresses remain fixed in one position, they act as constant dust magnets.
Installing an air purifier in the bedroom offers additional protection against airborne dust. Experts noted that air purifiers improve sleep quality and provide relief for allergy sufferers, dog owners, and households with wall-to-wall carpeting.
Cleaning experts previously highlighted a bedroom maintenance tip involving a spray mixture of water and household vinegar. Spritzing the solution onto bedding helps refresh sheets between laundry days, which is particularly useful in homes with poor ventilation or resident pets.
