In December 1999, a group of mineralogists discovered the Pulpí Geode in Mina Rica (Almeria). A cave about 8 meters long and 2 meters high, covered with huge gypsum crystals, some of them almost two meters.. By this definition alone it is already understood that it is a gem of nature, but it is more than that. Due to its transparency, storage condition and dimensions a worldwide phenomenon. A destination that combines history and beauty.

The Sierra del Aguilón has historically been the target of mining exploitation. In 1870, iron mining began, which became the driving force behind mining in the region, making Jaravia the largest country in the world. One of the most important mining regions in Spain. At least until the Civil War, when the farms were abandoned.

The story of Mina Rica, which seems to have been forgotten, resurfaces in December 1999 with the discovery of Mina Rica. Europe’s largest mining geode. Now, after many years of work, the mine is reopening its doors to everyone so that we can observe the wonderful legacy that the Pulpí miners have left us.

To browse this nature museum, simply book a date on the website of the company that manages the visits. they are priced 22 Euros for adults and 10 Euros for children 8-16 years old. It is available every half hour from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the maximum capacity is 12 people per shift (15 in groups).

duration consists of approximately 90 minutes and a guided tour through Mina Rica’s main galleries where an expert talks about geology, minerals and history. In total, it’s about forty-five meters from level one where the Giant Geode is located to level four.

Well, It is not a suitable trip for those who are claustrophic or have a fear of heights.. There are several flights of stairs to access the last level. There are 164 steps in total, and one of these sections consists of a 15-meter spiral staircase, while the others are several sections of regular tramex stairs. There is a parallel elevator for people with reduced mobility but still 80 steps to walk up and down.

Of course, forget about giving envy later on the networks because Cameras and cell phones are prohibited.. The present moment is the perfect moment to have a necessary connection with the earth that made us possible.
