Britain has been ranked the 37th safest country in the world in 2023 in an annual survey which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peace.
The survey – called the Global Peace Index and created by the Institute for Economics and Peace – covers 99.7 percent of the population and measures “social security, national and international conflicts and the level of militarization”.
The report concludes that Iceland is the safest country overall – although its release was before the current volcanic activity – followed by Denmark (second), Ireland (third) and New Zealand (fourth).
America is again in 131st place, just behind South Africa (130th) and Haiti (129th).
Afghanistan (163rd) is ranked as the least peaceful country in the world for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Yemen (162nd), Syria (161st), South Sudan (160th) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (159th).

EFFECTS OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE
The economic impact of the violence increased by 479%, or $449 billion, equivalent to 64% of Ukraine’s gross domestic product.
65% of men in Ukraine between the ages of 20 and 24 have fled the country or died in the conflict.
The report continues: “With Canada, there are only two countries in the North American region.” [11th] There is a 2.9 percent increase in peace and a slight decrease in peace in the US, with the overall score deteriorating by 0.38 percent.
“There is a significant difference in peace between the two countries.”
Why? The report shows that one of the reasons is the feeling of safety in Canada. “Less than 20 percent of Canadians say they do not feel safe walking alone in their city or neighborhood at night.”
One reason for America’s low ranking is its homicide rate. The report says: “The United States experienced the fourth largest increase in the homicide rate, which is now more than six per 100,000 inhabitants and more than six times higher than most Western European countries.” .’
