A content creator posted a TikTok series with tips for visiting New York based on her own experiences in the state.
Gwyneth Yuma shared her ideas for making her frequent visits fun and affordable despite the high cost of travel, transportation and activities.
Yuma, who says she flies to the Big Apple once a month, shared her airport preferences but also suggested people take the subway or walk because of Uber and taxi prices.
She told viewers that this can be effectively achieved with a single criterion: “Wear a good pair of shoes, even if it ruins a nice outfit.”
Yuma also gave viewers advice on hotel stays and how to help local New Yorkers keep their businesses going.

Yuma suggests travelers plan to fly into LaGuardia Airport. It is located in Queens, New York and is a hub for companies such as Delta and American Airlines
Her best tip is to book a ticket to LaGuardia Airport instead of choosing other options like JFK.
She said, “LaGuardia is much easier to get to and much more accessible — and if you don’t want to deal with those hectic train stations or hundred dollar Uber rides, I would avoid the other two airports at all costs.”
Yuma also shared, “Take the subway or walk anywhere.”
“Using public transportation or walking or biking is much more cost-effective, and I feel like it’s a much better way to experience New York.”

A popular form of transportation for travelers and local New Yorkers alike, the New York City Subway takes you through all designated areas for a small fee

One lesson Yuma learned the hard way is to “wear comfortable shoes”—in her case, Hoka sneakers that go with every outfit she wears in New York
This leads to the third tip: “Wear comfortable shoes.”
Yuma learned the importance of this tip “the hard way” and now wears her Hoka sneakers everywhere she goes.
She says that when traveling, it’s important to “always give yourself at least 10 to 15 minutes extra time wherever you go.”
The content creator added: “You never know what can happen on the road, especially if it’s your first time in the city.”

Chelsea Manhattan is a tourist area with great hotels on the west side as well as great shopping and dining
Yuma booked the best place to stay in New York and chose a hotel in the Chelsea or Midtown area.
She also praised her favorite accommodation, Hotel HGU in Nomad.
Yuma also added that she believes a trip to New York can be successful if you don’t have an itinerary – provided you’re willing to do the research.
“I like to pre-plan every meal we’re going to have, and I usually plan two specific things I want to do each day and then leave enough space in between for us to explore things or just come across things Yuma said.
This tip has worked in their favor on many occasions. She said that “some of the best days” she had in New York were days when there was “no plan at all.”

For a small fee, hotels now allow guests to store their luggage on site after check-out. You can find out where apps like Bounce or Luggage Hero are used
There are many things you can do for free in New York, as explained in tip number six.
Yuma suggested ideas like taking a ferry ride, visiting Central Park, or even attending a Taylor Swift listening party.
“There’s so much to do—you don’t have to spend money to have fun,” Yuma said.
She said it can be helpful to know that you can leave your luggage at the hotel, “even after you check out.”
According to Yuma, “If you have a later flight and need to leave your belongings somewhere, you can always leave your luggage at the hotel where you stayed.”
If you want to do this on your next trip, you can turn to apps like Bounce or Luggage Hero for help.

While there are some incredible sights to see, Yuma said it’s always nice to schedule two to three hours of free time each day of the trip.
“New York City can be very overwhelming and stressful, especially when it takes up your travel schedule,” she explained.
Her free time consists of things like eating and freshening up and “going out again”.
Walking back outside, Yuma said for tip number nine, “You should try new things.”
She said: “If there’s one place to try new things, it’s New York City. There are endless amazing restaurants and I’ve had some, if not all, of my best meals in New York City.”
Yuma also suggested “don’t go to a chain restaurant that you might go to in your regular town.”

Brownstone houses can be seen in various areas of Manhattan’s West Town – great places for rest and relaxation when you’re not staying in a hotel

Small and family-run businesses can be found all over New York City and can even offer great local and homemade food and products at affordable prices

Yuma ended her videos by encouraging travelers to support small businesses.
She said: “The best experiences I’ve had have been with small businesses and they really make a difference.”
“Knowing that your purchase will help them stay afloat, especially in New York City, where it’s so difficult to open and maintain a small business – some of the kindest people I’ve met , come from local businesses.”
Yuma calls Tip 10 the most important of all and believes it’s these small businesses that “really make New York so unique.”
