Austrian state railway ÖBB has introduced a new “pod” style cabin for solo travelers in its new generation Nightjet sleeper trains.
These new “mini cabins” are billed as “innovative cocoons,” with single beds and almost “everything you need for an undisturbed overnight trip.”
As photos show, these “modern” cabins feature a movable folding table with a built-in mirror, coat hooks, a reading lamp and adjacent lockers for carry-on luggage and shoes.
Individual travelers can enjoy the new pods from December 10, when Nightjet’s new trains – with “modern design, more privacy and more comfort” – hit the tracks. The first trips are planned on the Vienna-Hamburg and Innsbruck-Hamburg lines.

The current Nightjet service, launched in 2016, consists of sleeper cars for one to three people and sofa cars for up to six people.
In addition to the innovative solo pods, the new generation formations with a total of 33 sets will include comprehensively redesigned sleeping cars for one to two people and couch cars for up to four people.
The new four-person sleeper sofas promise to “increase your sleeping comfort and ensure a relaxed arrival at your destination”.

The “ultra-modern” mini-cabins are equipped with a movable folding table with an integrated mirror, coat hooks and a reading lamp. These new seven-car trains can accommodate 254 passengers
The sleeping cars, on the other hand, have a private bathroom – complete with a shower – and a “comfortable” seating area, so travelers can work, read or eat during the journey.
In addition, each new Nightjet is equipped with a “state-of-the-art” barrier-free couch compartment that can be used by up to two wheelchair users and one companion. A barrier-free toilet is also accessible via a low-floor entrance.
The ÖBB also offers improved transport options for travellers: there are six bike sheds for cycling enthusiasts and more space for luggage, prams and sports equipment.
The new generation trains will have a capacity for 254 passengers in seven car formations, consisting of two seated cars, three couchette cars and two sleeping cars.
One of Nightjet’s most exciting journeys connects Vienna Central Station with Paris’ Gare de l’Est, a journey of 14 hours.

Leonore Gewessler, Austrian climate minister, said: “Traveling by train means climate protection.” This applies especially to the night train.”
She said passengers could board in Vienna at night and wake up the next morning refreshed in another European metropolis.
