A road in the Lake District has been given a one-star rating on Tripadvisor for being too steep and described as ‘hell on earth’.
The road in question is the infamous Hardknott Pass, which is one of the steepest sections in England, with heart-pounding gradients of up to 30 per cent.
Tripadvisor user ‘Nicola H’ makes it very clear in her review of the pass, which is near the village of Eskdale, that she did not enjoy the drive up there, although she admits the views are ‘magnificent’.
She writes: “Holy Cr*p. Hairpin turns so steep and tight I thought we were all going to die. My 10-year-old son behind me on the right is asking for his inhaler because of a full-blown panic attack. An 8-year-old daughter right behind me, pulling my hair as she screams “yaaaaaaaaas” and “yeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaas” at every turn as if she were riding a horse.
“Twenty-six-week-old fetus in my belly, beating the living daylights out of me due to a strong aversion to G-forces from within.
Hardknott Pass (above) was given a one-star rating by Tripadvisor for being too steep – and called ‘hell on earth’.
“The man on my right with white knuckles behind the wheel and a wide, nervous smile that made him look like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit for twenty minutes.
“Do yourself a favor and go instead.”
Nicola’s experience is far from unique.
Jacqueline H also used Tripadvisor to describe her experience with the Hardknott Pass.

Tripadvisor user “Nicola H” said her son had a panic attack when she drove up the pass (above).

She wrote: “It’s been a few years and I have NEVER been back. My father-in-law liked to brag and thought he was Lewis Hamilton. He disregarded the rule that those going down gave way to those going up, and he stopped going up for someone coming down at 1:3.
“He couldn’t go up and the slope to our left was steep. While my father-in-law struggled, my husband and I got out the back and threw large rocks behind the rear wheels for traction.
“This is absolutely the truth of the gospel and I am convinced that we almost lost our lives that day.”
Meanwhile, Hayley S. said: “I saw God five times [on] this ride and begged for death. I would never do it again and wouldn’t recommend it unless nervous breakdowns are your thing.” And Denise S wrote on Tripadvisor: “My satnav accidentally showed me this route. I cried, screamed and whined all the time.”
The Hardknott Pass is tough in a car, but even tougher on a bike, as riders who have completed the Fred Whitton Challenge will attest.
The pace comes at the 94-mile mark of the 113-mile race, forcing many cyclists to climb the steepest sections.
For many, a life goal is to ride up the hill while holding onto the pedals of their bike.
