Experts have revealed which foods should be kept in the fridge – and it’s bad news if you keep apples in the fridge or tomato sauce in the pantry.

Consumer experts at CHOICE have shared their definitive guide to what should and shouldn’t be kept in the fridge. the pantry and listed basil, chocolate and peppers as things best kept in the cupboard.

Cheese, butter, nut and pumpkin seed oil and maple syrup, on the other hand, should always be kept in the fridge.

“Real 100 percent maple syrup (not maple syrup, which is mostly sugar) can actually develop mold when kept at room temperature,” the team advised.

Plant milk depends on whether it has been opened.

“They usually don’t need to be refrigerated before opening. However, once the box is opened, it must be refrigerated and used within a week,” say the experts.

Tomatoes should also be kept out of the fridge – ideally at 12ºC – as chilling “restricts their ability to produce substances that contribute to aroma and flavour”.

They also said it’s important to let food cool before putting it in the fridge, otherwise it could affect the internal temperature too much.

If you freeze your coffee, make sure you use a really airtight container and do it in small batches – once you’ve taken your beans out of the freezer, it’s best not to put them back.
