The view from the top of Ambuluwawa Tower in Sri Lanka is heavenly, but some may find the climb hellish, as evidenced by a traveler’s footage of her climb.
The Ambuluwawa Tower looks innocent from a distance, but as you get closer, visitors will notice that an extremely narrow spiral staircase with a barely waist-high stone handrail winds upwards outside. To enjoy the spectacular view from the 48-meter summit, visitors must brave this staircase, which is barely wide enough for two people to reach the summit.
Janet Newenham, who runs a travel company called ‘Janet’s Journeys’, filmed herself navigating the ‘crazy narrow’ staircase, revealing in her nerve-racking clip that the climb is definitely not an experience for those afraid of heights or claustrophobia to find fun. .
Janet, 36, told MailOnline Travel: “I’ve actually climbed this tower five times on different trips and it’s been different every time. The busier the tower, the more claustrophobic you can feel. It can get a little scary, especially if you’re afraid of heights.”

moments of panic?
“Not for me,” she said, “but a lot of my friends refused to go up and some definitely had their moments as we got higher and higher.” The wall is not very high, the higher you climb, the scarier it can become.’
However, the ordeal is worth it.
Irish travel blogger Janet continues: “The view is absolutely spectacular and gets more beautiful the higher you go. You get a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. You can see nearby towns and villages, rivers and rolling hills.’
Shooting her video while on a 20-day tour of Sri Lanka with friend Veronica, Janet describes climbing the tower as “one of the highlights”, adding that “taking a tuk tuk to the route, is an adventure in itself”.
