The Lake District town of Bassenthwaite might not be the place for a national park tour.
With less than 500 residents, it has only one pub and no shop in sight. But it seems to be working in its favour, as it has been voted the most peaceful travel destination in Britain.
It topped a list of more than 50 places to stay, judged based on factors such as the number of people posting about it on social media, the destination’s population, the number of hiking, birding and fishing trails and the crime rate.
The Cumbria town had the fewest Instagram hashtags – just 100 – leading it to be called a ‘hidden gem’.
The list gave Bassenthwaite an overall peace score of 86.62.
The village lies in the shadow of Skiddaw, England’s sixth highest mountain at just over 900m, leads to over 39 walking trails and sits on the shores of the four mile long Bassenthwaite Lake.
It has a surprisingly high crime rate of 63 per thousand inhabitants.
The list, compiled by CBD retailer Ice Head Shop, placed Dartmouth in Devon at number two and the small town of Over Haddon in Derbyshire’s Peak District at number three.
