A brigade of bartenders took to TikTok to reveal what really annoys them when it comes to customers and their behavior.
Many of the mixologists say their biggest annoyance is being asked what their “real jobs” are – despite pulling in six figures – while other pet-watchers wave credit cards at them, ask about stricter measures and customers with mysterious asked out drinks “to surprise”.

1. Ask for “strong” drinks but don’t want to pay double
Bartender and TikToker @NickAtNite says he doesn’t like people asking for spirits or complicated recipes
Many bartenders report that customers ask them to make their drink “strong” while making it, but they are not willing to pay twice as much.
Florida-based bartender and TikToker @NickAtNite tells his patrons: “Don’t ask me to make your drink strong. Chances are I would have thrown you free sooner, but since you asked me to make it strong and you not wanting a double, I draw the jigger (measure).’
2. Complicated drink orders
Mixologist @NickAtNite says while he can make drinks, he’s not a fan of complicated drinks with fancy names “like Cape Cod or Gay Pirate”.
He explains: “It’s one and one tells me – vodka [and] Cranberry, Captain Morgan Rum [and] eating pattern. I once had someone waste my time googling for a skinny bitch… it’s a vodka soda.”
The bartender also warns customers to order drinks from other bars or restaurants.
He concludes: “I don’t work there, I don’t know how to do it. You should probably have gone there.”
3. Rest your arms on the bar
Clancey Brooker, who works as a bartender in Australia and uses the TikTok handle @clankybabes, says one of her biggest annoyances is when people put their arms on the bar.
She says: ‘[It] it bothers me so much when people come to the bar and put their arms on the bar. Well where do you want me to make your drinks sir… I literally have to push them away… Then they complain. They say, “Ewww, it’s wet” and I say, “It’s the bar, like what!”

4. Credit cards wave
TikToker @clankybabes says another thing that makes her crazy about working behind the bar when people hold their credit cards over the bar before she’s ready to pay.
Re-enacting the scenario in a TikTok video, she says: “I go to my payment terminal and use a [the payment] walk in and they have their card as if waving over the counter. I say, “Sir, I’m coming over like I’m bringing you the machine, but I don’t like waving your credit card.”
Michelle, who works as a bartender in North Carolina and uses the handle @michellebellexo, says it’s just as annoying when someone taps the bar with their card. She mused, “It’s driving me crazy, I can’t focus on anything until that person stops.”
5. When asked “What is your real job?”
A number of bartenders report that they are often asked what their “real” or “real” job is. Hayley Kendall from Georgia, who goes by the handle @hayken412 on TikTok, says she really hates the question and finds it offensive.
She tells viewers, “I guarantee I’ll make as much money as you, if not more than you make in your ‘real’ job, and I also have a college degree, but I still choose to be a bartender. ” it’s more money.”

6. Don’t read beer taps
American bartender Rachael, who uses the TikTok handle @literallysoirrelevant, says she often has people walk into her bar and ask what beer they’re drinking when they’re literally sitting in front of the row of taps with all the offerings on display.
She informs viewers: “If you sit at the bar in front of the beer tap and ask me what we have on tap, I will punch you in the face.”
She adds that the same goes for anyone who has the beer list “in front of them” and refuses to read it. She exclaims, “You suck!”
8. Don’t Say “Surprise Me”
American bartender Rachael, who goes by the TikTok name @letterallysoirrelevant, says she doesn’t like it when people ask for “surprise drinks”.
Another thing that annoys many bartenders is when someone orders a drink and asks if it’s a “surprise”. TikTokker @letterallysoirrelevant says she now refuses to do so. She says, “If someone says ‘surprise me’ … um no, I don’t want that.”
She continues on the subject: “I don’t know what you like and I won’t dare make you a drink you absolutely hate if you can just tell me what you want or give me a general idea can’t give.” If someone says, “I like tequila, can you surprise me with a drink?” Sure, but if you’re thinking, “I don’t know, can you just surprise me?” No I can’t.’
9. Order water, but never drink it
TikToker and bartender @ewholliday has created a series of videos in which she describes her biggest dislike for customer interactions.
She says one thing that really drives her “crazy” is when people come into the bar and order water, but then never drink it and she has to throw out a full glass. She explains that people often come and order water to “feel better after sitting in a bar for eight hours straight.”

11. Premium drinks in complex cocktails
Another @ewholliday pet peeve is when customers ask for premium spirits in multi-layered cocktails. She says people have come in asking for premium spirits in her Long Island iced tea.
She explains why it’s so ridiculous by saying, “A Long Island Iced Tea [has] have about 15 [to] 11 liqueurs in there… you can’t taste the difference between them [Crystal] Kop and Absolut mixed with Tequila, Gin Whiskey, Sweet and Sour, Cola, Rum…’
She advises potential patrons of her bar: “If you want to raise money, you can use it to tip me.”
10. If the card is refused
Los Angeles resident Jamie Steck, who works as a part-time bartender to support her singing career, says one of the most uncomfortable parts of her job is getting a customer’s card declined. In a TikTok video posted on her @jaimiesteck account, she goes on to explain that it’s always an “embarrassment” and that the responses she gets are “always the same.”
She says most people scream “I can’t,” or some start going through their bank accounts and showing her how much money they have there. Others tell her to “use the card again.”
She adds, “I always try to be nice, I always try to say it discreetly… [But] then they always get their bank statement and they say “well it says you billed me 30 dollars here” and i like [a] current transaction has not been completed and has not been approved.’
