Three Eclipse Movies to Stream Ahead of Total Solar Eclipse

Three feature films featuring solar eclipses are available on streaming platforms ahead of the total solar eclipse occurring on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The eclipse will be visible in full from much of Spain at sunset, when the Moon will cover the Sun for more than a minute during its zenith phase.

Cinema has frequently used this striking astronomical phenomenon to construct memorable narrative moments. Works of fiction use eclipse sequences to shape story events rather than simply decorating the background sky. Three of these films can be found on digital services alongside one notable movie not currently available for streaming.

Pitch Black Sci-Fi Survival

Director David Twohy used a solar eclipse as a central plot mechanism in his science fiction film Pitch Black. The movie follows a group of crash survivors who must navigate a hostile and unknown environment on a desert planet.

The arrival of darkness on the planet carries severe consequences for the main characters. The eclipse directly worsens their situation and complicates their fight for survival, demonstrating how astronomical events can drive sci-fi plots. Pitch Black is available to watch on SkyShowtime.

Hellboy Supernatural Threat

Guillermo del Toro directed the 2004 film Hellboy, which connects a solar eclipse to supernatural elements and mythology. Ron Perlman plays Hellboy, a demon summoned during World War II who works for an organization fighting paranormal threats.

The eclipse frames key events in the story and marks the return of ancient forces that have waited long for their moment. Del Toro used the darkening sky to heighten the apocalyptic atmosphere of the film. Hellboy is available to stream on Prime Video.

Barrabás Filmed During Real Eclipse

Director Richard Fleischer integrated a real solar eclipse directly into the production of the 1961 film Barrabás. Starring Anthony Quinn, the movie depicts the biblical figure released by Pontius Pilate in place of Jesus.

To shoot the crucifixion scene, the film crew traveled to Roccastrada, Italy, during the total solar eclipse of February 15, 1961. Fleischer captured the exact moment the Moon obscured the Sun, capturing real natural darkness for Calvary without using special effects or artificial lighting tricks. Barrabás is available to purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Apocalypto Maya History

Mel Gibson featured a solar eclipse in Apocalypto, his film set within the Maya civilization. The astronomical event occurs during a tense sequence and ties directly into the beliefs and astronomical knowledge of Maya society.

The sudden disappearance of the Sun dramatically alters the situation for the main protagonist and surrounding characters. Although Apocalypto is not currently available on any streaming platform or digital store, it remains a key cinematic example of an eclipse.
