Netflix will release a full-scale anime remake of the Japanese pirate series One Piece, titled The One Piece, in February 2027. The adventure fantasy project reboots the show that has been airing for nearly thirty years.
The first season contains seven episodes with an overall runtime of about 300 minutes, making each episode roughly 40 to 45 minutes long. Original anime episodes ran for 20 to 22 minutes. Netflix will publish all episodes simultaneously, although the streaming service is officially unavailable in Russia.
Eiichiro Oda created the original manga, which launched in December 1997 with the first volume, Romance Dawn. By late July 2026, the series had reached 1,118 chapters across 115 volumes. By 2022, the manga sold over 500 million copies and surpassed Batman to become the second best-selling comic in history behind Superman.
Toei Animation produced the classic anime series starting in 1999, broadcasting 1,171 episodes and 15 feature films. New episodes aired almost weekly for twenty-five years before changing schedule in 2026 to release 26 episodes annually across two blocks with a summer break. Netflix also launched a live-action adaptation in 2023 that became its most expensive show, releasing a second season in 2026 and renewing it for a third season.
Teaser Videos and Viewer Reactions
Jump Festa first hosted the announcement of the remake in December 2023 during the 25th anniversary of the manga series. Netflix revealed the launch date three years later, scheduling the premiere thirty years after the manga first debuted.
In April 2026, Netflix uploaded a 40-second video to YouTube detailing work on the first season, featuring character sketches and concept art originally shared in 2024. The official teaser trailer debuted in June 2026, gathering 3.5 million views within a month.
Reactions to the reboot remained mixed, as some viewers questioned why an active series with a recent live-action adaptation needed a remake. One top-liked comment under the video stated that One Piece had been running for so long that it received a remake before it even finished.
East Blue Story Arc and Characters
The remake focuses on the East Blue story arc, covering the first fifty chapters of the manga across the East Blue ocean where the main story begins. The plot follows Monkey D. Luffy, a cheerful boy whose body gained rubber stretching abilities after eating the Gum-Gum devil fruit in childhood. Luffy aims to match great pirate Gol D. Roger and become the new Pirate King.
Luffy assembles the Straw Hat Pirates to reach the Grand Line, bringing together stern warrior Roronoa Zoro, daring thief Nami, cowardly dreamer Usopp, and talented cook Sanji. The crew faces early adversaries, including the crazy clown pirate Buggy.
Creators stated that the reboot will add no new story details to the journey of Luffy and his crew. Instead, the project will follow the original manga more closely than its television predecessor, speeding up narrative pacing, omitting filler episodes, and utilizing modern, dynamic animation.
Production Staff and Animation Studio
WIT Studio is producing the remake, drawing on its previous work on the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, the first season of Vinland Saga, and Spy x Family. Masashi Koizuka of Attack on Titan serves as director, supported by assistant director Hideaki Abe, who worked as lead animator on My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.
Taku Kishimoto, known for Bucchigiri?!, wrote the screenplay for the new series. Kyoji Asano of Attack on Titan and Takatoshi Honda of In/Spectre oversaw character design and animation.
