The Supernatural franchise is returning with a new comic book series from publisher Dynamite Comics that separates the previously inseparable Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean.
The American dark fantasy television show ran for 15 seasons before concluding. The series followed the two brothers as they travelled the United States hunting demons, ghosts, monsters and other supernatural entities.
Throughout the television run, Sam and Dean rarely experienced prolonged periods apart. Maintaining their partnership became an unwritten rule of the production, driven by the central importance of their relationship to the show's narrative.
The decision to keep them united was further influenced by the strong chemistry between actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who portrayed Sam and Dean respectively. Their dynamic became one of the defining characteristics of the series.
Early years as hunters
Dynamite Comics, a publisher known for adapting film and television properties, is now preparing a new era for Supernatural that breaks this established dynamic.
The company will first publish a 48-page special titled Wayward. This standalone issue will serve as a prologue to a new ongoing comic series.
Following the special, the regular series will feature two distinct storylines. The narrative will follow Sam and Dean Winchester as they travel their own separate paths.
The new stories are set early in the Supernatural timeline, focusing on the first years of the brothers' activities as hunters.
Independent journeys
The upcoming publication will push the formula of the franchise further by exploring what happens when the two characters are forced to operate independently.
