Supergirl arrives on HBO Max streaming on September 10

The superhero feature film Supergirl will premiere on HBO Max on September 10, becoming available to platform subscribers at no extra charge.

The digital streaming launch comes shortly after the movie appeared in cinemas and became available for digital rental and purchase, a strategy designed to soften the financial blow suffered by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios at the theatrical box office.

New opportunity to shine

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira, the film offers a fresh depiction of the comic book heroine Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Australian actress Milly Alcock.

In this version of the story, Kara Zor-El is presented as an interplanetary nomad who is headstrong, experienced, and reckless. Rather than conforming to the traditional image of an ideal superhero, she approaches heroism in her own distinct way and shows little hesitation when it comes to breaking conventions typically associated with do-gooders.

Interstellar Journey and Cast

The plot turns when an unexpected enemy launches an attack close to home, forcing Kara Zor-El to join forces with an unconventional companion. What begins as an unwanted alliance evolves into an interstellar journey across the cosmos, where both partners must navigate their own personal interests while attempting to save Krypto.

Krypto, a superpowered canine, is described as the best friend of Kara Zor-El as well as her cousin, Kal-El.

Alongside Milly Alcock in the title role, the feature stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. The film also expands the broader DC Universe with appearances by David Corenswet and Jason Momoa, incorporating established figures into the story.

Filmmaker James Gunn and executive Peter Safran served as producers on the feature project. The film adapts characters originally created by comic book creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Streaming Rotation on HBO Max

The arrival of Supergirl on HBO Max coincides with a catalog transition for another flagship title within the franchise. Superman, directed by James Gunn and belonging to the same DC screen universe, is scheduled to leave the HBO Max streaming lineup on September 18.

Subscribers planning to watch both films as part of their subscription will have an eight-day window between the arrival of Supergirl on September 10 and the departure of Superman on September 18, though catalog titles frequently return to streaming platforms in future rotation cycles.

DC Universe Background and Production Context

HBO Max is the subscription video on-demand service operated by Warner Bros. Discovery, serving as the digital streaming home for feature films, television series, and original content produced by Warner Bros. entertainment divisions. DC Studios operates as a dedicated studio arm within Warner Bros., tasked with overseeing live-action and animated adaptations of DC Comics properties under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Lead actress Milly Alcock earned international acclaim for her breakout role as young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO fantasy series House of the Dragon before being selected to portray Kara Zor-El. Director Craig Gillespie previously directed feature films including I, Tonya and Cruella, while playwright and screenwriter Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay adaptation.

Comic book writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created Superman in 1938, establishing the foundational mythos of Krypton, Kal-El, and the comic book superhero genre that continues to form the basis for modern DC Universe screen adaptations.
