The upcoming Harry Potter television series will release a new trailer on Wednesday, 2 September, offering fans fresh footage of its first season ahead of a Christmas premiere on HBO Max.
Producers announced the new trailer on Tuesday afternoon during the annual Back to Hogwarts fan event. The upcoming preview follows a previous teaser that set a platform record by drawing more than 277 million organic views in its first 48 hours.
The first season of the television adaptation will focus on J.K. Rowling's initial novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The new trailer will reveal further details about the opening season as the project prepares for its end-of-year debut, coming after the recent unveiling of new house crests for Hogwarts.
Cast and key roles
Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, taking over the role that launched Daniel Radcliffe to stardom in the feature film series. Young actors Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout complete the main trio as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
British author J.K. Rowling published the seven fantasy novels between 1997 and 2007. Warner Bros. previously adapted the books into an eight-part film series released between 2001 and 2011, which became one of the highest-grossing cinematic franchises in history.
An ensemble of veteran actors will lead the supporting cast. John Lithgow will portray Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will play Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu will star as potion master Severus Snape.
Lithgow is an American actor known for his roles in 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Crown. McTeer is an acclaimed British actress, while Essiedu gained international recognition for his performance in the drama series I May Destroy You.
Young actress Asha Soetan has been cast as Angelina Johnson, a witch who is a member of student organisation Dumbledore's Army. In an interview with website The British Blacklist, Soetan said the television adaptation will be much more personal and detailed than previous versions while continuing to highlight the magic of the original books.
Future seasons and creative team
Production has already confirmed that the series will return for a second season. Filming for the second installment is scheduled to begin next autumn and will adapt the second book in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The second season will feature a casting change for the role of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart. British actor Kit Harington will replace Nicholas Hoult after Hoult, who was born in Wokingham, left the production due to scheduling conflicts.
Harington is best known for playing Jon Snow in the HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Hoult has starred in major Hollywood productions including Mad Max: Fury Road and the X-Men film series.
The series aims to deliver a more extensive and faithful adaptation of Rowling's novels by exploring each book in depth across multiple seasons. From the second season onwards, the show will adopt a darker, more adult, and more sophisticated tone.
To support this creative direction, HBO Max has brought in Jon Brown, a screenwriter on the hit drama series Succession. Brown previously worked at HBO alongside Francesca Gardiner, who leads the Harry Potter adaptation, allowing both writers to bring their shared experience to the magical universe.
