Netflix has released a first teaser for Other Worlds, a new Stranger Things prequel series scheduled to premiere on the streaming service in 2028.
The upcoming drama transports the story back to the 1950s, setting the narrative in the town of Marion decades before the events of the original production. Plot details for the new show remain undisclosed, with the creators sharing only its mid-century timeframe and small-town location.
The preview video was published on the official Netflix YouTube channel, offering fans an initial glimpse of the project as development gets underway.
Creative team and production
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creative partners behind the original science fiction series, are serving as creators on the prequel. Screenwriter Kate Trefry, who previously wrote the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, has also joined the writing team for the production.
English director Joe Wright, whose screen credits include Black Mirror alongside films such as Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, has signed on to direct the first three episodes. Principal filming for the new project will take place on location in New Mexico.
The expanding Stranger Things universe
Stranger Things debuted on Netflix in 2016 and quickly became one of the streaming platform's flagship global titles. The original series follows a group of young residents in the fictional community of Hawkins, Indiana, during the 1980s as they encounter secret government laboratories and predatory creatures from an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
The cultural impact of the show helped launch the careers of actors including Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, while reviving broader public interest in 1980s pop culture, synthesiser soundtracks, and vintage fantasy games. The property has since grown to include tie-in books, comic book adaptations, video games, and West End stage shows.
With Other Worlds targeting a 2028 debut, the upcoming series marks the first live-action television spin-off announced for the franchise as Netflix continues to expand the world originally imagined by the Duffer brothers.
