Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has joined the main cast of the upcoming Netflix romantic drama miniseries Enigma Variations.
The project is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name by writer André Aciman. British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson was previously announced as the lead character in the limited series.
Netflix confirmed the new casting additions through Tudum, its official companion website. Vikander will portray Claire, one of the central figures in the drama.
Taylor-Johnson stars as Paul, a man shaped by the lovers who ignite and destroy him over six years of life-changing personal transformations.
Expanding cast lineup
Vikander is not the only new addition to the cast. Tudum also confirmed that Sarah Pidgeon will play Chloe, while Peter Hermann joins as Isaac.
Juliana Canfield has been cast in the role of Allie, and Francesca Cavallin will portray Luciana.
The ensemble cast also features Riley Keough as Maud, Devon Terrell as Manfred, Nicholas Podany as Harlan, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Noah.
Vikander is best known for her roles in films such as The Danish Girl and Tomb Raider. Taylor-Johnson has starred in major feature films including Nocturnal Animals, Tenet, Bullet Train, Kraven the Hunter, Nosferatu, 28 Years Later, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The supporting actors bring extensive television and film experience to the project. Pidgeon previously appeared in Love Story and Honeymoon with Harry. Hermann is known for roles in Younger, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Blue Bloods. Canfield has appeared in Succession and FAST.
Keough starred in Daisy Jones and The Six and Jay Kelly. Terrell appeared in Barry, It is What is Inside, and Coded Bias. Podany was featured in Saturday Night and Ponies, while Clemons-Hopkins appeared in Hacks and Candyman.
Creative team and production
Production studio Media Res is producing the miniseries for Netflix. The independent studio is known for high-profile television series such as The Morning Show, Pachinko, and the upcoming project The Miniature Wife.
Amanda Kate Shuman, whose writing credits include the fantasy series The Wheel of Time, is writing the screenplay for the adaptation.
Oliver Hermanus is directing the miniseries. Hermanus previously directed the acclaimed feature films Living and The History of Sound.
Media Res executives Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer are serving as executive producers alongside novelist André Aciman and veteran film and television producer Monica Levinson.
The announcement comes as major streaming services unveil their upcoming programming lineups for the autumn season.
