Spider-Man: New Day becomes third highest-grossing film

The superhero sequel Spider-Man: New Day has become the third highest-grossing film in cinema history, taking more than $2.33 billion at the global box office.

The Marvel Studios release overtook Avatar: The Way of Water to secure its place in the all-time top three. It now sits behind only the 2019 ensemble film Avengers: Endgame and the original 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar.

Analysts say they do not rule out the possibility that the film could finish its theatrical run as the highest-grossing project in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie also continues to dominate the domestic box office. Following its fifth weekend in theatres, local takings reached $891 million as it held off competition from rival releases Odyssey and Wily Coyote.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a sprawling media franchise of interconnected films and television series based on characters from Marvel Comics. Spider-Man, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko in 1962, is one of the publisher's most enduring heroes.

Peter Parker returns

The storyline of Spider-Man: New Day is set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The film follows the friendly neighbourhood hero as he continues to protect New York City from crime, while his loved ones have completely forgotten about his existence.

Meanwhile, a new chain of crimes occurs in the city, which leads to the emergence of one of the most dangerous opponents in Peter Parker's life.
