Television creator Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland have renewed their agreement with Netflix, extending their exclusive contract through 2031.
The five-year extension expands the partnership between the streaming platform and Shondaland, aiming to keep the production company tied to Netflix for 14 years following its initial arrival in 2017.

Expanded contract terms and inclusion programs
Under the terms of the renewed deal, Netflix retains exclusive rights to all films and series produced by Shondaland. The agreement also expands beyond screen content to cover video games, merchandising, and live experiences based on the company's entertainment franchises.
Netflix will additionally maintain its support for Shondaland's inclusion projects. This includes backing the Ladder Program, an initiative designed to train creators from underrepresented groups in technical production roles.
Executive statements on extended partnership
Rhimes said she was thrilled to extend her relationship with Netflix, noting that for nearly a decade the streaming platform had provided Shondaland with the autonomy and support needed to tell stories that entertain and reflect diversity and humanity in ways that connect with audiences around the world.
The chief content officer at Netflix said few creative partnerships had demonstrated what was possible when a singular vision met a global stage, producing stories that became true phenomena and shaped fashion, music, and culture far beyond the screen.
She added that nearly ten years later, the collaboration continued to prove that Rhimes's instinct extended beyond brilliant storytelling to serve as the key to successful production. She stated that Netflix was extremely proud to remain the home where Shondaland continues to surprise and entertain viewers worldwide.
Bridgerton franchise performance and viewership
Shondaland's most successful project on Netflix to date is the romantic drama series Bridgerton, which recently premiered its fourth season and has already been renewed for a fifth installment.
The series ranks among the most watched productions in Netflix history. Its first season reached 113.3 million views, while its third season recorded 106 million views, placing both titles in the streaming service's all-time top 10 rankings.
Netflix confirmed that the fourth season also surpassed 100 million views, building on the global impact previously achieved by the spin-off prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
