Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi announced a 20 percent salary increase for teachers starting September 1 following a cabinet meeting on Thursday, August 6. Koretskyi shared the announcement on Telegram.
Student stipends will also double, and more than 3 million schoolchildren will receive free meals. Koretskyi stated that all issues requiring further work must be resolved before the start of the school year.
He added that student and teacher safety is the top priority, so construction of shelters and provision of school buses to communities will continue. The head of the cabinet noted that students in all grades must be fully supplied with textbooks despite Russian attacks on printing houses and warehouses.
Ukrainian civil servant and workforce salaries
UNIAN previously reported that average monthly salaries for employees of central executive bodies reached 66.84 thousand hryvnias in June, according to the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine. That amount is 7 thousand hryvnias higher than in the same period last year. The Ministry of Finance emphasized that civil servant salaries include lump-sum payments such as compensation for unused vacation and social aid, causing monthly averages to fluctuate.
Results of a study by GRC.UA showed that Ukrainian incomes have fallen significantly since the start of the war. In the summer of 2022, 36 percent of people lacked money before payday each month, compared to 73 percent of Ukrainians who currently experience constant money shortages. Only 3 percent of citizens never or almost never face financial difficulties. Although most Ukrainian companies express a desire to maintain competitive salaries, the general trend over the past year has been freezing pay levels rather than raising them, with 15 percent of Ukrainians taking salary cuts.
