Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and actor Freddie Prinze Jr are celebrating 24 years of marriage, with Gellar marking the anniversary by sharing nostalgic memories on social media. The couple, who have been together since 2001 and share two children, remain one of the most enduring pairs in Hollywood.
Marking the occasion on her personal Instagram account, Gellar published throwback photographs of the couple from earlier in their relationship. Reflecting with emotion on how far their bond has come, she wrote in her caption asking whether anyone could have imagined telling those young kids where they would find themselves 24 years later, adding that while they have technically been together for 26 years, they have been married for 24.
Meeting on Set and First Date
Gellar, best known for starring as Buffy Summers in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, first met Prinze on the set of the 1997 horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. Prinze gained widespread recognition in the late 1990s through starring roles in romantic comedies including She's All That. Although they met in 1997, their romantic relationship did not begin until 2000.
Speaking to People magazine in 2020, Gellar recalled that the pair had been close friends for a long time and had frequently gone out for meals together. She explained that on the night their romance began, they had scheduled a dinner with a mutual friend who failed to show up, leaving the two of them to dine alone. Prinze told the same outlet that the solitary dinner made him realize Gellar was the woman of his life, adding that he never went out with another woman afterward nor wished to do so.
Mexico Wedding and Family Life
The couple got engaged in 2001 before tying the knot on September 1, 2002, during a ceremony in Mexico. Over the past two decades, they have maintained a private family life away from public scrutiny while raising their two children, daughter Charlotte and son Rocky. Gellar has regularly spoken with affection about their long journey together.
Addressing the key to a lasting relationship in a previous interview, Gellar noted that everything in life requires effort, whether it is a friendship, a business partnership, or a marriage. She observed that modern society has become highly disposable, comparing relationships to mobile phones that people discard and replace rather than repair when broken.
