Sanatan Naik, a 29-year-old man from Odisha, India, has returned home alive nearly a month after his family cremated a body believing it was his.
Police officers contacted the family with the unexpected news that Naik was alive and that authorities would escort him back to his home.
Disappearance and discovery in rice field
Naik went missing in late July after leaving his residence on a bicycle. Relatives conducted an extensive search throughout the area for several days, but they were unable to locate any trace of him.
Approximately ten days after his disappearance, law enforcement officers discovered the heavily decomposed body of an unknown man in a waterlogged rice field situated near the Naik family home. Authorities noted that the corpse had been submerged in water for a prolonged period, which made physical identification difficult.
Family members were subsequently called to inspect the remains. After examining the clothing items on the body, relatives concluded that the deceased individual was Naik and accepted the remains from police for burial rites.

Following the handover of the body, the family conducted funeral services and proceeded with cremation. Relatives then began observing traditional mourning rituals, which continued for almost a full month before police made contact.
