Lateefa Banu, a 45-year-old resident of Tarigam village in Jammu and Kashmir, died after being mauled by a bear while working in a garden on August 31.
The predator climbed into the garden plot where she was working and launched the fatal assault, according to local news outlet Kashmir Life. She sustained severe injuries in the attack, and medical personnel were unable to save her life.
Search efforts have not yet succeeded in capturing the aggressive bear, which remains at large in the surrounding area.
The fatal attack has raised intense concerns among local residents regarding the risk of further wild animal encounters. Many villagers in the region rely on agriculture for their living, growing fruits and vegetables in gardens located immediately adjacent to forest zones.
Wildlife risks in rural farming communities

The fatal incident in India follows another recent bear encounter reported in the United States, where an 80-year-old woman survived an attack in Estes Park, Colorado. In that incident, the wild animal entered the resident's house while she was sleeping inside.
Estes Park is a mountain town in northern Colorado located near Rocky Mountain National Park. Situated at an elevation of over 7,500 feet, the community borders expansive wildlife habitats where American black bears are active throughout the warmer months of the year.
Mountainous regions in both North America and South Asia face similar challenges regarding human activity along woodland borders. Local wildlife agencies often advise residents living near forest boundaries to clear fallen fruit and maintain awareness while working outdoors.
In Tarigam, community members remain on high alert as agricultural work continues in plots near the forest boundary. Local authorities have not yet located or captured the bear responsible for the fatal attack on Lateefa Banu.
