A Russian tourist named Yulia has been hospitalised in Vietnam after being bitten by a dangerous spider while stargazing on the ground at night.

The traveler was on holiday with friends when she lay down on the ground to watch the night sky and felt a sudden bite, according to Russian news outlet Baza. She became unwell almost immediately, experiencing sudden weakness, dizziness, severe lower back pain and aching across her body.

Yulia went to a local hospital for emergency treatment, where medical staff administered painkillers and drew blood samples for laboratory analysis. Healthcare workers suspect the bite was inflicted by an ornate karakurt spider, a venomous arachnid found in warm climates.

Ornate Karakurt Spider Characteristics

The ornate karakurt, known scientifically as Latrodectus tredecimguttatus, is a venomous spider species belonging to the black widow genus. Females pose the primary hazard to humans, featuring black bodies marked by characteristic red spots that occasionally carry white borders.

Venom from the ornate karakurt contains a neurotoxin capable of inducing intense pain and muscle spasms that require prompt medical intervention. Despite carrying dangerous toxins, the species is non-aggressive toward people and typically bites only when subjected to accidental contact.

The species is a member of the comb-footed spider family Theridiidae, which is distributed across arid and temperate environments in Southern Europe, Central Asia and parts of North Africa. Scientific studies document that venom from the genus acts directly on the nervous system, releasing neurotransmitters that trigger severe muscle cramps and systemic distress.

Previous Spider Bite Incidents

Physicians treating suspected widow bites typically focus on pain management and monitoring patient vital signs while blood tests assess systemic reactions. While serious spider bites among international travelers in Southeast Asia are uncommon, health experts advise tourists lying on open ground during nighttime hours to use protective mats or clothing to avoid contact with ground-dwelling fauna.

The report follows another recent case where a British tourist nearly lost her ear after being bitten by a spider during a trip to the Greek island of Rhodes.
