Two Russian tourists from Moscow nearly lost their lives after suffering an acute allergic reaction to kumis at a local restaurant in Kazakhstan.
Sisters Yaroslava and Renata fell ill within moments of sampling the beverage, according to a report published by the Telegram channel Baza. Both women began experiencing facial swelling, throat tingling, and difficulty breathing after taking just a few sips.

The sisters managed to retrieve antihistamine medication quickly, which helped relieve Yaroslava's symptoms. Renata's condition continued to deteriorate over time, however, as she suffered from widespread body rashes and nearly suffocated.
Local residents called an ambulance to the scene for Renata. Medics managed to halt Quincke's edema before her condition reached a critical stage, preventing a life-threatening airway obstruction.
Both women were diagnosed with an acute allergy to kumis and were prescribed a course of allergy tablets. The sisters noted that neither of them had ever experienced a similar reaction to any other food or drink prior to the incident.

Kumis is a traditional Central Asian beverage produced through the fermentation of mare's milk. Widely consumed across Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, the drink possesses a distinct sour flavor and mild carbonation. Dairy proteins and natural fermentation byproducts within the drink can occasionally induce severe allergic responses in sensitive individuals.

Quincke's edema, commonly known as angioedema, involves rapid swelling beneath the skin and mucous membranes. The reaction often affects the face, lips, and throat, posing severe risks of airway blockage that require immediate medical intervention.

The incident in Kazakhstan follows a separate health emergency involving a Russian traveler abroad. A female tourist visiting Bali woke up with severe facial burns after unknowingly crushing an insect crawling across her face in her sleep, releasing its toxic fluid onto her skin.
