More than one million Russian travelers visited Egypt in 2026, driving a projected 50 percent annual growth in tourist demand across the country.
Egypt is experiencing a tourism resurgence as travelers shift from traditional all-inclusive pool holidays in Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh toward cultural tours, Nile cruises, and diving in Luxor, Aswan, and Alexandria. In 2025, Egypt ranked among the top five overseas destinations for Russians.
Arthur Muradyan, vice president of international tourism at the Association of Tour Operators (ATOR), said in an interview with Lenta.ru that demand is currently 20 percent higher than last year. He added that tourist traffic from Russia has fully recovered to levels seen in 2014 and 2015 before flights were suspended, placing Egypt behind only Turkey and slightly ahead of the United Arab Emirates.
ATOR noted that affordability remains the main driver of popularity. The average tour package costs between 100,000 and 110,000 rubles per person, allowing a couple to stay in a quality hotel for 200,000 to 220,000 rubles, which is lower than comparable rates in Turkey.

Resort Preferences and Visa Regulations
Muradyan explained that Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh continue to form the core of beach demand. He noted that demand for the Sinai Peninsula is higher due to a larger hotel selection, developed infrastructure, richer coral reefs, and superior diving opportunities.

Travelers visiting the Sinai Peninsula can use the free 15-day Sinai stamp instead of purchasing a single-entry visa for 30 dollars, or 2,300 rubles, per person.
Maya Kotlyar, founder of travel agency MAYEL Travel and tourism expert, told Lenta.ru that growth is also connected to recent tensions in the Persian Gulf region. She said that while official travel restrictions were lifted, psychological recovery in destinations such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman is gradual, leading travelers to choose Egypt as an accessible option with direct flights.
Muradyan stated that independent travel is relevant mainly for lesser-known Egyptian destinations, while beach holidays remain entirely managed by tour operators.
Travel Seasons and Entry Formalities
Elena Shelekhova, head of the press service at travel planning service OneTwoTrip, told Lenta.ru that spring is the peak travel period, accounting for 40.2 percent of hotel bookings between March and May. Autumn ranks second with 27.9 percent, winter represents 16.6 percent, and summer accounts for 15.3 percent due to extreme heat.
Kotlyar described autumn as an ideal season featuring comfortable weather, warm seas, and family-friendly conditions at competitive all-inclusive rates.
Russian citizens entering Egypt for up to 15 days under the Sinai stamp require an international passport valid for at least six months from the entry date, return tickets, and a confirmed hotel reservation. Visitors staying longer than 15 days or traveling to cities such as Hurghada, Alexandria, or Cairo must fill out a migration card and purchase a 30-day single-entry visa online via the Egyptian Ministry of Interior website or at the airport for 30 dollars, or 2,300 rubles.
Historical Landmarks and Nile Cruises
Shelekhova noted that beach resorts lost part of their market share in 2026 to cities offering extensive excursion itineraries. Major cultural destinations include the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Karnak Temple Complex, the Valley of the Kings, and Abu Simbel.

Excursions to Luxor, located on the banks of the Nile, attract large numbers of visitors. Founded in the late fourth millennium BC around 3200 to 3000 BC, the city served as the capital named Waset from 1550 to 1070 BC and is recognized as an open-air museum.

Luxor contains the Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings with Tutankhamun's tomb, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. Aswan, an ancient border fortress city known in antiquity as Suenet, was established around 3000 BC as the gateway to Nubia and features the Philae Temple, the Aswan Dam, and Abu Simbel temples.

Muradyan highlighted that travelers can visit both Luxor and Aswan on all-inclusive Nile river cruises aboard luxury vessels. He noted that Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 to 332 BC, offers a combination of ancient history and Mediterranean atmosphere through the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay built on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Kom el-Shoqafa catacombs, and the Corniche waterfront.

Muradyan added that demand for Egyptian Riviera resorts such as Marsa Matruh and El Alamein remains lower than for Red Sea destinations due to fewer all-inclusive hotels and a required three-hour land transfer from Cairo.
Local Culinary Traditions
Egyptian cuisine reflects Arab, Mediterranean, and African influences, relying heavily on vegetables, legumes, and fresh seafood.

The most popular national dish is koshary, which consists of rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, and tomato sauce topped with fried onions. A traditional breakfast dish is ful medames, featuring fava beans stewed in olive oil, lemon juice, and spices, often served with eggs and olives.

Desserts include Umm Ali, a sweet pudding made from puff pastry, milk, nuts, and raisins. Local cuisine also includes ta'ameya, an Egyptian falafel prepared with fava beans instead of chickpeas, and grilled meat kebabs served with flatbreads and fresh vegetables. Coastal cities such as Alexandria feature menus focused on fish, squid, shrimp, and octopus.
Hotel Spending and Service Complaints
Data from OneTwoTrip shows a shift toward budget accommodation options in 2026. Average daily hotel spending decreased from 14,500 rubles in 2025 to 11,500 rubles in 2026.
Five-star hotel bookings declined to 39 percent in 2026 from 42 percent in 2025. Four-star hotel bookings dropped to 24 percent from 27 percent, while three-star bookings grew to 22 percent from 15 percent.
Many travelers reported that five-star hotels failed to meet expectations, citing worn furniture, poor sanitary conditions, and inadequate service. A traveler named Angelina who stayed at the five-star Rewaya Inn Resort in Hurghada in May said the rooms featured worn furniture, leaking air conditioners, and broken toilet brushes. She added that drinks were served in worn plastic cups and that she was initially assigned a room overlooking a construction site despite paying extra for an upgrade.
Angelina also reported that buffet food included unpalatable sushi made with ingredients resembling cardboard and soy meat, salads with raw potato blocks, and overly greasy options. She noted that local beaches suffered from litter including wrappers, bottles, and cigarettes, alongside odorous horses and camels near the water.
Another traveler named Elena reported that her room at Mirage Bay Resort & Aqua Park in Hurghada lacked hot water, had rusty plumbing, and contained dust that triggered her child's asthma, while restaurant food contained flies and caused her mother to fall ill.
Kotlyar noted that the hospitality sector continues to expand, pointing to the June 2026 opening of the Rixos Premium Magawish Bay View in Hurghada, which features 442 rooms, nine swimming pools, villas, and a marina.
Desert Safaris and Diving Excursions
Egypt offers activities outside hotels, including off-road vehicle safaris, quad biking, desert overnights, and tours of the White Desert and Siwa Oasis.
Yuri, a diving instructor and manager of the Crocodile diving club, stated that the Red Sea offers predictable conditions and weak currents suitable for both beginners and experienced divers. He noted that diving takes place year-round, with peak conditions for beginners occurring between April and November when water temperatures range from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius, compared to 21 to 22 degrees in winter.
Yuri outlined two diving formats: daily diving from hotel bases in Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam, Safaga, or Dahab, and safari liveaboards offering up to 17 dives per week. Liveboard trips provide access to the Golden Triangle route covering Brothers, Daedalus, and Elphinstone reefs, where steep drop-offs attract gray reef sharks and hammerhead sharks from May to November.
Top dive sites identified by the Crocodile club include Ras Muhammad National Park featuring Shark Reef, Yolanda Reef, and cargo from the sunken ship Yolanda; the Thistlegorm shipwreck, a British World War II vessel sunk in 1941 carrying Bedford trucks, BSA and Norton motorcycles, and steam locomotives; and Samadai Reef, known as Dolphin House, which hosts a resident population of spinner dolphins.
Service Customs and Safety Guidance
Angelina described frequent pressure to make purchases and pay tips, noting that room cleaners left a stained towel on a sink when tips were omitted, requiring daily tips of one to two dollars. She added that hotel shop owners altered item prices daily, selling chocolate for four dollars, or 319 rubles, on one day and six dollars, or 479 rubles, on the next.
Conversely, a traveler named Asya reported polite treatment from Hurghada hotel staff and vendors without pushy behavior.
Muradyan stated that ATOR has recorded no major safety threats since flight services resumed, explaining that public beach shark attacks and food poisoning incidents represent standard statistics for a destination receiving over two million annual visitors. Angelina noted that armed police guards on excursion buses appeared excessive and mentioned receiving frequent attention from local men when traveling without a male companion.
Travelers are advised to observe precautions such as drinking bottled water, respecting local Islamic customs in public and religious areas, and selecting street food carefully. Asya concluded that Egypt remains attractive for its warm weather, seas, and affordability, despite lower service standards across sectors.
