Production has officially begun on New World, an upcoming Russian adventure comedy film following an elderly couple on a cross country journey. Film production companies Kleva Film, Vesta and Nashe Kino announced the start of filming, which is scheduled to take several months before a planned theatrical release.
The project tells the story of an older husband and wife who decide to escape from a prestigious boarding house. The pair set off on a journey across the country, travelling towards their long held dreams.
Family pursuit
As the couple embarks on their adventure, their adult children are forced to launch a pursuit to track down the runaway parents. The chase across the country prompts the children to reflect on their own youth and remember what it feels like to be kids again.
Russia is the largest country in the world by landmass, spanning eleven time zones from Eastern Europe to the Pacific Ocean. A cross country journey provides a massive geographical canvas for a road movie, offering an ambitious undertaking for both the escaping characters and the pursuing children.
Ensemble cast
The ensemble cast features a number of established Russian film and television actors. The leading roles are played by Olga Khokhlova, a prolific actress known for her work in Domovenok Kuzya, and Nikolai Dobrynin, who previously appeared in Ded Fomich.
They are joined by Alina Lanina from Otchiy Bereg, Maksim Lagashkin, whose extensive credits include the acclaimed drama Arrhythmia, and Yan Tsapnik from Odinochka. Lagashkin and Tsapnik are both widely recognised for their frequent appearances in modern Russian comedy projects.
The film brings together a wealth of experience in Russian domestic cinema. Road movies have traditionally provided a reliable framework for character development and situational comedy as protagonists navigate unfamiliar environments.
The production is being directed by Andrey Panteleev, known for his previous work on Kolbasa. New World will arrive in cinemas following the completion of the filming schedule.
